Arizona Centennial Volunteer Challenge
In celebration of Arizona’s Centennial, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism has created the Arizona Centennial Volunteer Challenge and is asking Arizonans to pledge 100 volunteer hours between now and February 2012. As a community partner in the Arizona Centennial Volunteer Challenge, the City of Glendale is encouraging residents, employees and current volunteers to participate. Volunteer Code Compliance
The Code Compliance Department is currently accepting applications for a Volunteer Technician working to help improve the appearance of City rights of way by removing illegal signs. On-Call Sporadic General Office Support
We have a need for people who would be interested in volunteering on an on-call basis. Occasionally departments need additional help due to being temporarily short-staffed, for large bulk mailings or for projects requiring a few extra hands. This would provide an exposure to several different departments and an opportunity for an overall view of the workings of the City. You would be placed on a list and contacted when a need arose. Survey Aide - Transportation Department
POSITION SUMMARY:
To provide support to the Transportation Department staff in the areas of conducting fixed route bus survey to meet Federal Compliance guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conducts survey on fixed bus (GUS) routes. Survey Aide would track passenger, mileage, and fare counts .Proofs and checks survey data , forms and material for accuracy and completeness. Special projects as determined by staff.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Survey’s are done on random days Sunday thru Saturday, but are usually only two to three days a week. 10-15 hours per week
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Basic math
Attention to detail, good organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must ride fixed route (GUS) Buses
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum age (16) and or older

PLANT OPERATOR 1 -
UTILITIES
JOB SUMMARY:
Assists an Operator or Maintenance personnel in the basic duties of operating and maintaining a water or wastewater treatment plant and related treatment facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Lab testing, data entry, and other utility operator duties, e.g. general plant maintenance, and cleaning, performing inventories, flushing lines, special projects
TIME COMMITMENT:
4 hours/day, 3-5 days/week
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Basic knowledge of safe work practices around chemicals, equipment, and electricity.
Basic knowledge of computers and data bases.
Basic knowledge of water or wastewater treatment is most desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoor work, hazardous chemicals, plant equipment with moving parts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school degree.
ADEQ Water and/or Wastewater Operator I certificate is most desirable.
Visitor Center & Glendale Greeter
The Glendale Visitor Center offers two volunteer programs; Visitor Center Volunteers and Glendale Greeters.
(Please note: currently there are no available volunteer positions with the Glendale Visitor Center or the Glendale Greeter Program, but interested individuals can be placed on a waiting list for future opportunities.)
Visitor Center Volunteers interact with visitors from around the world and the state, answering questions and providing information about not only Glendale but the entire state of Arizona. Volunteers are located at the reception desk at the Glendale Visitor Center and in many cases are the “First Face of Glendale.” The Glendale Visitor Center opened in October 2000 and assists approximately 15,000 walk in visitors per year. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and requires a weekly shift of 4 hours.
The Glendale Greeter Volunteer Program utilizes our best resource, people who live and work in Glendale, and have a passion for their hometown. Greeters provide a high-level of customer service skills to serve as visitor ambassadors and a community resource for Glendale during signature special events, at mobile visitor centers, community events and mega events. This highly visible team creates a welcoming and well-managed environment and requires proactive contacts with visitors to promote a tourist friendly atmosphere. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and positions usually require a commitment of 4 hours per event.

Water Conservation
Environmental Resources Department, Water Conservation Division POSITION SUMMARY: The Water Conservation volunteers assist the Glendale Water Conservation Office with a variety of community outreach programs. Water Conservation volunteers help at special events, assemble home water audit kits, and assist office staff with special projects and ongoing programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Prepare mailings
- Assemble home water audit kits
- Assemble water conservation packets in response to water waste reports
- Assist with data entry
- Assist with water conservation-related research
- Communicate general program information to the public
- Assist with water conservation-related events and programs
- Assist office staff with related duties and assignments
TIME COMMITMENTS:
- 2-6 hours per month
- Recommended at least 25 hours per year
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Basic knowledge of computers
- Ability to conduct independent research on the Internet and at the Glendale Public Libraries
- Good communication and organizational skills
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Indoors in an office setting at a computer terminal or desk sitting, using hands
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 16 to volunteer
- Desire to learn more about the Water Conservation Office’s outreach programs
- Ability to perform clerical tasks with minimal supervision

“Wayne Drop” - Water Conservation Mascot Volunteer Environmental Resources Department, Water Conservation Division POSITION SUMMARY: “Wayne Drop,” the Water Conservation Office’s official mascot, assists the Glendale Water Conservation Office by attending festivals, schools, and special events and spreading the “Water Use it Wisely” message throughout the community. For those that are interested in volunteering at family-centered events, become a Water Conservation Mascot volunteer! ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Wear the “Wayne Drop” mascot costume OR serve as “Wayne Drop’s” handler
- Greet attendees at festivals, schools, and special events
TIME COMMITMENTS:
- 2-6 hours per month
- Recommended at least 25 hours per year
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to wear a mascot costume
- Some prior mascot experience is helpful, but not required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Indoors or outdoors depending on the event type
- Mascot costume weighs approximately 5 to 8 pounds and can limit mobility and visibility
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 16 to volunteer
